Voices That Carry: Podcasts To Get You Through The Day
My all-time, all-star, favorite podcasts to keep you smiling and thoughtful
1. Thick & Thin – hosted by Katy Bellotte
Katy Bellotte has had a YouTube channel HelloKaty that I’ve been watching since early high school. I feel like I’ve actually grown up with this girl, and currently we are living similar lives tackling our dreams. She is wise, she is perfectly flawed, she is, dare I say, the realistic version of Carrie Bradshaw without the sometimes-cheesy rhetorical questions. Katy, if you’re reading this I want to be friends. Her podcast is exactly like her blog The Katy Project and hits on everything that you’d chat about over a second cup of coffee on a Sunday morning: boys, taking on the patriarchy, makeup, and hustling while making time to look up at the stars (even if you have to imagine them under the city lights).
2. UnStyled – Hosted by Refinery29’s Christine Barberic
Refinery29 is my ultimate favorite. The brand captured the bubbly yet courageously empowered spirit of many millennial women. It began a revolution stating that you can be obsessed with a leopard heel as a fall accent piece while marching for universal healthcare on the Hill. UnStyled has fabulous guests who talk about not only the clothing pieces that make them standout but the powerful person that wears them.
3. Monocycle with Leandra Medine – hosted by Leandra Medin
Okay, if you’ve never heard of Leandra Medine, or her blog Man Repeller stop reading this and google her. She is a raw and endearing girl boss in a leather jacket. There is a depth of honesty to her podcasts that have made me put on my sunglasses mid-train ride to tear up, but also enough of a riot grrl oomph in them that has inspired me to listen to Bikini Kill’s Rebel Grrl as I walk to my office. If I ever meet Leandra Medine I’d confidently kiss her on both cheeks, ya feel?
4. The Bustle Huddle – hosted by Bustle editor
Bustle, like Refinery29, is a badass place on the interwebs. The podcast is bright, funny, and bombastic. The topics it discusses are that of conversations I’ve had with my best friends. It is like listening to the perspectives of people who have walked different miles in different, albeit dope, shoes. It’s one of those things that makes you contemplate life without actually realizing you have.
5. Strong Opinions Loosely Held – Hosted by Refinery29’s Elisa Kresinger
I’ve already raved about Refinery29 but I’ll do so again. I love that website so much. Strong Opinions Loosely Held is exactly what it sounds like. It covers everything from skincare, to breaking the glass ceiling, to stock options and futures. It is listening to an older sister, more so like a cool older sister that lives in Tribeca. Mwah! Refinery29, I adore you.
